Modern Day Troubadour – An Interview with Conquer Entertainment

Troubadour: one of a class of lyric poets and poet-musicians often of knightly rank who flourished from the 11th to the end of the 13th century chiefly in the south of France and the north of Italy and whose major theme was courtly love.

Today the Troubadours still exist making their living from their music one night at a time. Walter Finley is a great example of a Modern-Day Troubadour.  I asked him what it felt like to have his sole income be generated by his voice and the instrument in his hand, what does his day to day life look like… “I am a Troubadour, I travel around to different towns and cities looking for places to play. I literally walk into venues and say can I play here just like the poet-musicians of times past.  Nobody knows my name when I get started, I have to play a few cover songs to win them over and get them to like me, I have to start up some kind of dialogue and get them involved which is when I am able to introduce my original music. I love to tell the stories behind the songs.”

Why do you do it? It seems like a hard way to carve out your spot in this world. “Because at the end of the day, whether I was background noise for a moment, the star of my own one-man show for 30 people or standing on stage in front of thousands… those moments when you hear a crowd singing your song back to you when someone comes up to me and lets me know that they loved one of my songs, that the words touched them it makes me feel good and I know I made a difference.”  /

Tommy DeCarlo

Tommy DeCarlo was born in Rome, New York, located 50 miles east of Syracuse, New York. DeCarlo discovered and became a fan of the band Boston at age 12. Years later he began writing his own music in the 1990’s and recording covers of himself singing his favorite Boston songs. He posted these recordings on his daughter’s MySpace page.

Fast forward to March 2007. Original Boston lead singer Brad Delp unexpectedly died at the age of 55. To honor Delp, DeCarlo wrote and recorded an emotional song about his favorite vocalist. His daughter suggested that he post that song as well, on her Myspace page.

Another Boston fan heard DeCarlo’s work and suggested that he send his Myspace page link to Boston management. DeCarlo sent the link, and was approached by Boston founder Tom Scholz not long after. At the time, DeCarlo was working at a Charlotte area Home Depot as a Credit Manager.

Scholz invited DeCarlo to perform at the Brad Delp Tribute Concert, which was happening soon at the Bank of America Pavilion in Boston, MA.[1] Later in 2007 DeCarlo was hired by Scholz as the lead vocalist of Boston and is still the Current Lead Vocalist. He has toured with the band on all tours since 2008.

Tommy DeCarlo currently resides near Charlotte, North Carolina with his wife Annie. DeCarlo (the band) is fronted by Tommy DeCarlo along with his son, guitarist Tommy DeCarlo Jr. As Tommy tells it, Tommy Jr. is truly the backbone of DECARLO. He has a great feel for what’s going to work on stage, not just musically, but production wise, too and leads the charge in the band’s performances. Of course, no band is complete without a great supporting cast, which in DECARLO’s case is multi-talented keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Payton Velligan, drummer Christian Sturt and bassist Edward Sturt.

The band’s debut album ,“Lightning Strikes Twice” is a very fine slice of melodic rock, deeply rooted in the sound of masters of the genre like Kansas, Foreigner, Survivor, and REO Speedwagon.

“We’re very excited about the release of “Lightning Strikes Twice!” continues Tommy. “As an artist/songwriter you are always going to be proud of your work, but there’s nothing more gratifying than to please those who matter most… the fans! It’s our hope that the music on this debut release will in some way, shape or form touch those who take the time to listen to it.” Simply put… DECARLO ROCKS! If you are a classic AOR/Melodic Rock band, you simply can’t miss this debut album!
